Privacy Policy

StanceSplit is a service that lets you take stances on debate topics and see how your views compare with others. We built it to be useful with as little personal data as possible.

TL;DR

StanceSplit measures what people think, not who they are.

  • We do not store your name, phone number, postal address, or any identifier that directly points back to you in our application database.
  • Your votes are separated from account identifiers, session identifiers, and IP-related data.
  • We use one essential cookie to remember your anonymous session. No tracking cookies, no third-party advertising.
  • We do not sell, share, or provide any data that directly identifies you, including but not limited to your name, email address, account identifiers, session identifiers, or IP-related data.
  • We may use or license de-identified opinion datasets derived from StanceSplit responses for research, statistical analysis, machine learning, commercial insights, or collaborations.
  • Only you can intentionally share a stance in a way that is linked to your identity or profile through StanceSplit's sharing features.

What We Collect

Anonymous vote data. Each time you take a stance, we initially store the topic, your stance (PRO or ANTI), and a timestamp associated with your anonymous session, so that your experience remains consistent across visits. When we use or provide access to opinion datasets outside the core operation of StanceSplit, we remove session identifiers and other direct identifiers.

Country and abuse-prevention data. We detect your country from your request headers via our hosting provider's edge network so we can show country-level statistics. We store the country alongside your votes. We may store a cryptographic hash of your IP address solely for abuse prevention and rate limiting. We do not store your raw IP address in our application database.

Optional demographic answers. After you have taken several stances, we may ask you to optionally share your age range, gender, or lifestyle bracket. These answers are stored against your anonymous session only, and only if you choose to provide them. You can dismiss every prompt.

Anonymous session. We create a session identifier when you first visit StanceSplit. This is stored in an essential cookie on your device and as a row in our database. It exists only to keep your vote history consistent across visits. It contains no personal information.

Technical error data. When something breaks, we send error reports to Sentry. These reports include standard debugging information such as browser type, page, and error message, and, in some cases, an anonymized replay of the broken interaction with sensitive content masked. We use this only to fix bugs.

Self-hosted product analytics. We run Umami on our own infrastructure to understand how people use StanceSplit in aggregate, such as page views, basic device type, and country. Umami does not use tracking cookies and does not share data with third parties.

What We Do Not Collect Today

  • No name, phone number, or postal address.
  • No payment information.
  • No precise location.
  • No browsing history outside StanceSplit.
  • No advertising identifiers.
  • No raw IP address. We may store a hashed version for abuse prevention.
  • No email address. If we introduce accounts in the future, an email address may be required to sign up; we will update this policy before that change.

Cookies

We use a single essential cookie to maintain your anonymous session. Without it, the service cannot function. We do not use third-party tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or any cookie that follows you across websites.

How We Use Data

We do not use your data for advertising. We do not profile you for marketing purposes. We do not sell, share, or provide any data that directly identifies you, including but not limited to your name, email address, account identifiers, session identifiers, or IP-related data.

  • To run the core product, including showing you stances, recording your votes, and displaying comparison statistics.
  • To prevent abuse and duplicate voting.
  • To understand aggregate usage and improve the product.
  • To diagnose errors and crashes.

De-Identification Principle

We separate opinion data from identifiers. When we use, publish, or provide access to datasets derived from StanceSplit responses, we remove account identifiers, session identifiers, IP-related data, and other direct identifiers before doing so.

Sensitive Topics

Some StanceSplit topics may involve politics, religion, health, sexuality, or other sensitive subjects. We treat these responses as opinion data and do not use them to identify individuals, advertise to them, or build personal profiles for marketing purposes.

Aggregated and Anonymized Data

StanceSplit may publish, share, or provide access to aggregated, anonymized statistics derived from vote data, for example, "X% of respondents in country Y agree with Z."

In addition, we may use, publish, license, or provide access to de-identified opinion datasets derived from StanceSplit responses, including but not limited to individual votes and associated non-identifying metadata such as topic, stance, country, demographic categories, and timestamps. Such datasets may be used for research, statistical analysis, machine learning, commercial insights, or collaborations.

Such datasets will never include names, email addresses, account identifiers, session identifiers, IP addresses, or any other information that directly identifies a specific user.

We acknowledge that certain rare combinations of country, demographic categories, and timing may, in theory, narrow a record to a small number of individuals. We do not design our datasets to enable such re-identification, and we do not provide third parties with the auxiliary information that would be required to attempt it. We do not intentionally design, use, or provide datasets in a manner intended to identify or target specific individuals.

Future Account Features

We do not offer user accounts today. If we add accounts in the future through providers such as Google or TikTok, or through email-based sign-up, we will update this policy before doing so. Even then:

  • Your vote history may be linked to your new account so that your stances persist seamlessly across devices and sessions. This linkage exists only on your account, for your use.
  • We will not share, sell, expose, or transmit data that directly identifies you, including but not limited to your name, email address, account identifiers, or session identifiers, in connection with your vote history.
  • Only you can intentionally share a stance in a way that is linked to your identity or profile through StanceSplit's sharing features.
  • Any future account features will be opt-in.

Third-Party Services

We rely on a small set of providers to operate StanceSplit:

  • Vercel, for hosting and edge networking. Used to deliver the website and detect country from your request.
  • Neon, for managed PostgreSQL database hosting in the EU. Used to store anonymous votes, sessions, and topic data.
  • Sentry, for error monitoring. Used to capture crash and error data, including anonymized session replays with sensitive content masked.
  • Umami, for self-hosted analytics. Runs on infrastructure we control; no data is shared with the Umami project itself.

Data Retention

  • Anonymous session identifiers are retained for up to 1 year of inactivity, then deleted.
  • Vote data is retained indefinitely in de-identified form. Because votes are separated from account identifiers, session identifiers, and IP-related data, they are not intended to identify or be linked back to a specific individual after your session expires.
  • Demographic answers are retained for up to 1 year tied to your anonymous session. If accounts are introduced in the future, demographic data for account holders will be retained for as long as the account exists, and deleted upon account deletion.
  • Error and analytics data is retained according to the default retention windows of each provider, typically 30 to 90 days for Sentry.

Your Rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Spanish data protection law, you have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data about you.

Because StanceSplit does not store any personally identifying information, we generally cannot locate "your" data on request; there is no email address, account, or identifier linking the votes to you as a person. If you want your current session and its associated votes and demographic answers deleted, please contact us at the email below and we will explain the options available.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Spanish Data Protection Agency, Agencia Espanola de Proteccion de Datos (AEPD), or your local supervisory authority.

Minimum Age

StanceSplit is not intended for users under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a person under 16 has used StanceSplit, please contact us and we will take appropriate action.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top and, where appropriate, surface a notice in the product. Continued use of StanceSplit after a change indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
